Joe Biden’s historic visit to Angola

Luanda, Angola – US President Joe Biden is set to make a historic visit to Angola from December 2 to 4, marking the first time a sitting American president visits the country. The trip is expected to inject fresh momentum into a partnership described as stronger now than at any point in the past three decades of diplomatic ties.

Angolan President João Lourenço, who has made strengthening relations with the US a cornerstone of his foreign policy since taking office in 2017, achieved a major diplomatic success with his visit to the White House in December 2023. During their meeting in the Oval Office, President Biden lauded Angola as a vital partner, stating, “We are at a historic juncture.

The partnership between Angola and the United States is more important than ever.” The discussions focused on key areas of collaboration, including energy, trade, and infrastructure development.

Economic cooperation will be a central theme of Biden’s visit, with Angola aiming to secure over $5 billion in new US investments.

The agenda is expected to include announcements on joint initiatives in renewable energy, mining, and digital technology, alongside commitments under the Prosper Africa framework.

With Angola’s strategic role as a regional economic hub and its ongoing governance reforms, Biden’s visit underscores the country’s rising importance in American engagement with Africa and the success of President Lourenço’s diplomatic efforts to elevate Angola’s global standing.
