Luanda, Angola – Kenya Airways is set to resume direct flights to Luanda, Angola, starting March 2025, as announced during a meeting between Kenyan President William Ruto and Angolan President João Lourenço at the Angolan presidential palace.

The move aims to enhance diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations. Angola also plans to waive visa requirements for Kenyans, reciprocating Kenya’s earlier decision, which President Ruto highlighted as a key step in enabling professionals like teachers to access Angola more easily.

The two leaders also discussed major African issues, including peace in the Great Lakes region, reforms within the African Union (AU), and the upcoming AU Commission chairperson elections. President Ruto, tasked by African heads of state to spearhead AU reforms, invited President Lourenço to a retreat in Kenya later this month ahead of the AU Heads of State Summit in February.

They further emphasised the importance of a joint meeting between the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the East African Community (EAC) to bolster the Luanda Process for Peace in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

Trade relations were also on the agenda, as President Ruto requested Angola’s support for former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s bid for AU Commission chairperson.

Accompanied by top officials, including Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Governors Anne Waiguru and Gladys Wanga, President Ruto concluded his Angola visit as part of a regional tour, which began in Ghana for President John Mahama’s inauguration.
