Luanda, Angola – In a highly anticipated showdown, Angola’s National Women’s Handball Team secured their 16th African Women’s Senior Handball Championship title on Saturday, defeating Senegal 27-18. The final took place at the Martyrs’ Pavilion in Kinshasa, where the reigning champions once again proved their dominance on the continental stage.
The atmosphere was electric as more than 5,000 fans packed the arena to witness the clash of African powerhouses. Angola took an early lead when left winger Naíra Caquintas scored the first goal, assisted by right back Magda Cazanga. Senegal’s star player, Doungou Camara, quickly equalized, setting the tone for an intense first half.
The opening 10 minutes were a back-and-forth battle, but Angola soon pulled ahead with a 3-0 scoring run, extending the lead to 6-3. Senegal’s head coach Carlos Viver made tactical adjustments, assigning tighter defensive coverage on Angola’s offensive threats. However, Albertina Kassoma and Magda Cazanga broke through Senegal’s defense, while goalkeeper Marta Alberto skillfully stopped multiple attempts by Dougara Camara.
Playmaker Helena Paulo, one of Angola’s standout performers, led the attack with precision, creating scoring opportunities for her teammates. By the 15-minute mark, Angola’s defense forced Senegal to play under pressure, limiting their passing lanes and disrupting their rhythm. The first half ended with Angola in control, leading 13-8.
The second half showcased Angola’s continued dominance. The team relentlessly attacked Senegal’s goal, pushing the score to 21-11 by the 11th minute. Even when playing with fewer players due to penalties, Angola maintained their intensity. Senegal’s physical fatigue became apparent, leading to critical mistakes, while Angola capitalized on every opportunity.
Helena Paulo’s stellar performance earned her the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. Her leadership and technical skill were key to Angola’s victory, as they claimed yet another continental title.
