Harare, Zimbabwe – Zambian MP Emmanuel “Jay Jay” Banda, representing the Petauke Central constituency, has been apprehended in Harare, Zimbabwe, following three months on the run. Authorities have confirmed his detention and are now coordinating with Zambian officials for his extradition.
Banda, facing charges of aggravated robbery, attempted murder, and escaping lawful custody, had been missing since August after fleeing from a hospital in Chipata where he was under police watch. His case has drawn widespread attention due to the contentious circumstances surrounding his initial arrest.
According to sources close to the investigation, Banda was tracked down in a joint operation involving Zimbabwean and Zambian security forces. He was reportedly taken into custody without resistance and is now being held in Harare.
Zambian Minister of Home Affairs Esther Mwansa confirmed that extradition proceedings are underway, ensuring that Banda will stand trial for the pending charges upon his return. “This case underscores our commitment to upholding the rule of law, regardless of an individual’s position or status,” Mwansa said in a statement.
The Banda case has sparked debates in Zambia over judicial fairness and the impartial application of the law. While his supporters claim he is the victim of political persecution, critics argue he must be held accountable for the alleged crimes.
Banda’s arrest marks the end of an extensive manhunt and paves the way for legal proceedings that are expected to draw significant international attention.
