Alliance of Sahel States rejects ECOWAS withdrawal timeline

The Alliance of Sahel States (AES), formed by Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, has dismissed the six-month reconsideration period proposed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) as an attempt to undermine their new coalition.

At a recent summit in Abuja, ECOWAS announced the transition period, set to end in July 2025, but AES leaders declared their exit by January 2025 “irreversible,” accusing ECOWAS and its Western allies of seeking to destabilize their bloc.

In their communiqué, the AES criticized ECOWAS for imposing “inhumane and irresponsible” sanctions following coups in the three countries and failing to address their internal security crises. The AES also reiterated that ECOWAS’ unilateral decisions would not bind its members, who are now exploring mechanisms to issue independent travel documents and bolster their alliance.

While ECOWAS membership grants visa-free movement across the region, the implications of the AES departure remain uncertain. The three nations have increasingly distanced themselves from ECOWAS efforts, signaling a shift toward a more autonomous regional framework amidst ongoing political and security challenges.
