Lagos, Nigeria – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Abuja on Saturday, marking the first visit by an Indian head of government to Nigeria in 17 years. The historic visit, made at the invitation of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, was hailed as the beginning of a new era in the strategic partnership between the two nations.
During their meeting, both leaders emphasized their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation in critical areas such as defense, energy, technology, trade, and development. They underscored the importance of these ties in addressing global and regional challenges while fostering economic growth and stability.
President Tinubu highlighted the significance of Nigeria’s relationship with India, noting that the South Asian country is one of Nigeria’s top trading partners. In 2023, bilateral trade reached record levels, with Nigeria exporting oil and natural gas to India, while importing pharmaceuticals, technology, and essential machinery.
“Nigeria sees India as a strategic ally for sustainable development and economic diversification. We are determined to explore new frontiers of cooperation,” Tinubu stated.
Prime Minister Modi echoed this sentiment, expressing India’s readiness to support Nigeria in key areas such as defense modernization and energy transition. “Together, we can forge a partnership that not only benefits our people but also contributes to a more equitable and secure world,” Modi said.
A major focus of the talks was defense cooperation. India committed to providing military training, advanced technology, and logistical support to bolster Nigeria’s armed forces, enhancing their ability to address domestic and regional security challenges.
In the field of technology, Modi proposed creating an innovation hub to connect Indian and Nigerian startups, fostering the exchange of knowledge and joint solutions in healthcare, agriculture, and infrastructure.
The meeting also paved the way for agreements in renewable energy, education, and industrialization. Both leaders stressed the importance of driving joint initiatives across the African continent, with Nigeria playing a central role in promoting regional trade and development.
Modi’s visit ends a prolonged period without high-level exchanges between the two countries and signals a renewed commitment to mutual progress and cooperation.
“This is just the beginning of a chapter that will be defined by shared growth and mutual respect,” Tinubu concluded.
