Cristiano Ronaldo: A global icon challenging Eurocentrism in football

Lagos, Nigeria – Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the most celebrated players in football history, is not only renowned for his extraordinary achievements on the pitch but also for his outspoken stance on the need to globalise the sport. Over his illustrious career, the Portuguese star has consistently challenged the notion that top-tier football is confined to Europe, advocating instead for a more inclusive, worldwide perspective.

Ronaldo’s transfer to Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr in 2023 marked a pivotal moment in his career and the sport’s evolution. While some critics dismissed the move as financially motivated, Ronaldo quickly dispelled such notions. “My mission here is to help develop football and demonstrate that quality exists far beyond Europe,” he asserted during his unveiling in Riyadh.

His arrival catalysed unprecedented interest in the Saudi Pro League, which has since attracted marquee players like Karim Benzema and Neymar. The league’s global profile has soared, with broadcasting rights secured in over 100 countries and significant investment in grassroots programmes. “Football is changing. It’s no longer just about the Premier League or La Liga. Other leagues are rising, and they deserve the same respect,” Ronaldo stated in a recent interview, underscoring his commitment to the sport’s globalisation.

Ronaldo has been vocal in challenging the entrenched Eurocentric bias within the sport. Speaking at a recent awards gala where Vinicius Junior was honoured for his anti-racism efforts, Ronaldo questioned the limited recognition given to leagues outside Europe. “If Ligue 1 [France] is considered competitive despite the dominance of PSG, why can’t the Saudi Pro League or other emerging competitions receive the same level of respect?” he asked, highlighting a disparity in how football is perceived and valued globally.

He further argued that competitiveness and quality are not confined to Europe. “Ligue 1 boasts Messi, Neymar, and Mbappé, but that doesn’t mean players in Asia, Africa, or the Middle East aren’t equally talented. Given the right resources and opportunities, talent can thrive anywhere.”

At the same gala, Ronaldo praised Vinicius Junior for his courage in confronting racism in football. “Vinicius embodies the power of sport to inspire and break down barriers, regardless of origin or adversity,” Ronaldo said. His remarks reinforced the importance of recognising and celebrating diverse talent across the footballing world.

Ronaldo also highlighted the systemic inequalities in how football is structured and rewarded. “The sport is universal and shouldn’t be monopolised by one continent or a small elite. The time has come to acknowledge talent and achievement on a global scale,” he added.

Ronaldo’s tenure in Saudi Arabia has also spotlighted the untapped potential of emerging leagues. By joining Al-Nassr, he has not only elevated the Saudi Pro League’s status but also inspired a wave of investment in infrastructure, coaching, and player development across the Middle East. Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which aims to diversify the country’s economy and expand its cultural influence, includes football as a cornerstone of its strategy. Ronaldo’s presence has been pivotal to this effort, making him a key figure in the region’s football renaissance.

Beyond the Middle East, Ronaldo has advocated for greater recognition of talent from other continents, including Africa, Asia, and South America. He has frequently criticised the limited scope of individual awards like the Ballon d’Or, which often overlook players from less celebrated leagues. “If we want football to grow, we need to celebrate its global nature and not just focus on one region,” he stated.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s influence extends far beyond his accolades and on-field exploits. By choosing to play outside Europe’s traditional powerhouses and challenging the status quo, he has positioned himself as a pioneer for the globalisation of football. His actions and words resonate with a vision of football as a truly universal sport, accessible and celebrated in every corner of the globe.

“Football belongs to the world,” Ronaldo concluded during his most recent public appearance. “It’s our duty as players and ambassadors of the game to help shift perspectives and build a sport that reflects its global audience.”

With every move and statement, Ronaldo continues to redefine what it means to be a footballing icon. He is not just a player but a catalyst for change, advocating for equality, opportunity, and recognition for all. His legacy, much like the sport he loves, transcends borders, uniting fans and players from every walk of life.
