Lagos, Nigeria – Equatorial Guinea continues to prioritise modernisation of its armed forces, aiming to enhance operational capacity and maritime security. During an official mission to China in July 2023, Vice-President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue engaged with the China Shipbuilding Trading Corporation (CSSC) to explore opportunities for bolstering the nation’s maritime defences.

The discussions centred on the acquisition of a state-of-the-art frigate equipped with advanced radar systems, alongside a transport vessel. These additions are intended to combat piracy in the Gulf of Guinea and ensure territorial maritime protection. Negotiations have also included detailed discussions on pricing, payment terms, and build quality.

In April 2024, the nation expanded its naval capabilities with the addition of two Chinese-built Harbin Z-9 helicopters. These multipurpose aircraft enhance surveillance and rapid response capabilities, with the government signalling plans to acquire additional units to reinforce anti-piracy operations in the region.

Further solidifying its commitment to military expansion, the government unveiled a strategic plan in January 2024 to grow its armed forces to over 100,000 personnel by 2034. This ambitious strategy encompasses an increase in troop numbers and procurement of additional military assets to safeguard the nation’s resources and people.

These efforts underscore Equatorial Guinea’s determination to secure its maritime borders. The collaboration with China, a global leader in shipbuilding—accounting for 75% of new ship orders worldwide in 2024—highlights the nation’s proactive approach to enhancing its defence infrastructure.

By leveraging advanced technologies and international partnerships, Equatorial Guinea is positioning itself as a regional leader in maritime security, reflecting its long-term vision for stability and growth.
