LUANDA — Angolan President João Lourenço, the African Union Champion for Peace and Reconciliation in Africa, is seeking to strengthen his continental diplomatic role as Luanda hosts a summit focused on improving Africa’s ability to prevent and resolve conflicts.

The African Union Executive Council held its 26th Extraordinary Session on August 29 to prepare proposals for heads of state and government, who are due to meet in Luanda on August 30.

Angola’s Foreign Minister Téte António called for the summit’s decisions to be “concrete, applicable and realistic”, backed by verifiable results and mechanisms to monitor implementation.

Key priorities include faster responses to early signs of instability, stronger mediation mechanisms, closer coordination between the African Union, regional organisations and member states, and greater African capacity to finance peace and security initiatives.

The proposals include a draft decision, an action plan and an implementation matrix that will be considered by African leaders.

For Angola, the summit reinforces Lourenço’s strategy of positioning the country as a continental platform for dialogue, mediation and conflict prevention. It will also test the African Union’s ability to turn early warnings into early action and prevent political crises from escalating into prolonged conflicts.
