Johannesburg, South Africa – Within just six months, the Senegalese government has recovered $1.2 billion embezzled in corruption schemes over the past decade. This figure represents 8% of the 2024 national budget and marks the largest amount ever reclaimed in the country’s history. The achievement stems from an anti-corruption task force spearheaded by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
In comparison, Nigeria has recovered approximately $3 billion in public funds since 2015, underscoring Senegal’s rapid progress.
The government aims to recover an additional $2 billion by the end of 2025, further enhancing transparency and public trust.
The recovered funds will be channelled into priority projects such as health and education. Approximately $500 million has already been allocated to build 150 new schools and 50 healthcare centres, directly benefiting over two million Senegalese citizens.
