Dakar, Senegal – Former Senegalese President Macky Sall has extended his congratulations to the Pastef party, led by current Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, for its victory in Sunday’s legislative elections. In a statement issued on Tuesday, Sall praised the provisional results, marking a moment of democratic respect and political civility.

“On behalf of myself and the leaders and members of the Takku Wallu Senegal coalition, I would like to congratulate Pastef (Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics, and Fraternity) on its victory in Sunday’s legislative elections,” said Sall. The former president, who led the Takku Wallu Senegal coalition in the elections, had hoped to stage a political comeback following his departure from the presidency in March after the last presidential polls.

Sall’s remarks represent a significant moment for Senegalese democracy. Although no longer serving as head of state, the former president remains a key figure in the nation’s political landscape and played a central role in the legislative elections as leader of the opposition coalition.

His public recognition of the results underscores Senegal’s commitment to democratic principles and the peaceful transfer of power. Political analysts and civil society groups have widely commended Sall’s gesture as a sign of political responsibility and statesmanship.

Provisional results indicate that Pastef secured a commanding victory in the legislative elections, solidifying Ousmane Sonko’s leadership as Prime Minister. The party, renowned for its progressive agenda and emphasis on ethical governance and social reform, garnered widespread support, particularly among younger voters and the working class.

The outcome signals a major shift in Senegal’s political dynamics, providing Pastef with an expanded mandate to implement its ambitious policies centred on work, ethics, and fraternity.

Sall’s involvement in the legislative elections was widely interpreted as an attempt to reassert himself in Senegalese politics following his exit from the presidency. While the Takku Wallu Senegal coalition fell short of victory, Sall’s acknowledgment of Pastef’s success highlights his commitment to democratic values and could enhance his reputation as a seasoned statesman.

Political observers suggest that Sall will continue to wield considerable influence in Senegalese politics, likely playing a critical role in shaping the opposition’s agenda in the newly constituted parliament.

Sall’s statement has been met with positive reactions from across Senegalese society and the international community. The peaceful transition and acceptance of election results have been praised as a testament to Senegal’s political maturity, further solidifying its reputation as a bastion of democracy in West Africa.

With Pastef’s victory, Senegal embarks on a new political chapter, bringing both challenges and opportunities. The party now faces the task of delivering on its promises while addressing the country’s pressing economic and social issues. Meanwhile, the opposition, led by figures like Sall, will aim to regroup and position itself as a robust counterbalance in the political arena.

Sunday’s legislative elections came at a pivotal time for Senegal, a nation grappling with significant economic and social challenges. Pastef’s success reaffirms its status as the dominant political force and sets the stage for a transformative legislative term.

Macky Sall’s congratulatory message underscores Senegal’s adherence to democratic norms, further enhancing its standing as a model for peaceful political transitions and democratic consolidation in the region.
