Kigali, Rwanda – Angolan President João Lourenço has approved the decoration of 113 senior military officers from the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA), reinforcing the government’s commitment to military hierarchy and institutional stability. Presidential decree 22/25, issued on January 31, recognizes these officers’ dedication to national sovereignty and internal security.

Among those honored are retired senior officials, including Generals Artur Santos and João António Santana Lungo, as well as Admiral João Pedro da Cunha Júnior.

The move comes at a strategic moment for Angola, which is set to celebrate 50 years of independence in November, underlining the FAA’s role in maintaining peace and stability.

This decision gains added significance amid rising regional tensions, particularly the escalating conflict between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda, a crisis threatening security in the Great Lakes region.

As an active mediator in efforts to resolve the dispute, Lourenço underscores the need for a disciplined and operationally ready military to address both domestic and external challenges.

Angola has played a key role in peace negotiations, seeking to de-escalate violence and prevent further destabilization in Central Africa. Strengthening the FAA not only ensures national security but also enhances Angola’s diplomatic standing as a critical player in regional stability efforts.
