SEATTLE — Belgium escaped defeat in their opening Group G match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, drawing 1-1 with Egypt thanks to the immediate impact of substitute Romelu Lukaku.

Egypt stunned the tournament favorites by taking the lead in the 19th minute. Midfielder Emam Ashour scored with a superb long-range strike, giving the African side a deserved advantage after a disciplined and confident start to the match.

Despite enjoying most of the possession, Belgium struggled to break down Egypt’s organized defense and created few clear scoring opportunities. With his team trailing, Belgium coach turned to Lukaku in the 66th minute.

The decision paid off almost instantly. Just 23 seconds after entering the game, the veteran striker was involved in an attacking move that resulted in an own goal by an Egyptian defender, leveling the score at 1-1.

Buoyed by the equalizer, Belgium increased the pressure in search of a winning goal. However, Egypt remained resilient and held firm through the closing stages to secure a valuable point against one of the group’s strongest teams.

The draw leaves both nations with one point and keeps their hopes of reaching the knockout stage firmly intact. While Belgium avoided an early setback, Egypt will take confidence from a performance that showed they can compete with some of the world’s top football nations.
