Benin’s government said Sunday it had thwarted an attempted military coup after a small group of soldiers briefly seized state television and announced the dissolution of all institutions. The group, calling itself the Military Committee for Refoundation, claimed President Patrice Talon had been removed and named Lt. Col. Pascal Tigri as its leader.

Security forces swiftly regained control, restoring radio and television broadcasts. Talon’s whereabouts remain unclear following gunfire reported near the presidential residence. The Economic Community of West African States condemned the attempted takeover, as the region confronts a wave of military interventions.
