TAAG Deploys Boeing 787-10 on Luanda–Lisbon Route in Fleet Modernisation Drive

LUANDA — Angola’s flag carrier TAAG will on Friday, July 17, introduce the Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner on its Luanda–Lisbon–Luanda service, marking the aircraft’s first commercial deployment on the airline’s European network as part of a broader strategy to modernise its long-haul fleet.

Configured to carry 367 passengers, the wide-body aircraft enters service after completing certification requirements from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), allowing it to operate commercially on European routes. The introduction forms part of TAAG’s fleet renewal programme aimed at improving fuel efficiency, lowering operating costs and enhancing the passenger experience.

Initially, the Dreamliner will operate two weekly frequencies, departing Luanda on Fridays and Saturdays on overnight services and Lisbon on Saturdays and Sundays on morning departures.

The Luanda–Lisbon corridor remains one of Angola’s most strategically important international air links, serving business travellers, investors, tourists and the large Angolan and Portuguese diaspora. The route also supports growing trade and institutional ties between the two countries.

Like several African carriers investing in next-generation aircraft to strengthen long-haul competitiveness, TAAG is positioning itself to capture rising demand while improving operational economics. The Boeing 787-10 consumes significantly less fuel than older-generation wide-body aircraft, offering lower emissions and greater efficiency on medium- and long-haul routes.

For Angola, the aircraft’s arrival carries significance beyond aviation. It reinforces Luanda’s ambition to expand its role as a regional gateway linking Southern Africa with Europe and the South Atlantic, while supporting the country’s broader economic diversification agenda through improved international connectivity and more competitive air transport infrastructure.
