Gaborone – Botswana is holding its general elections today, October 30, with more than 925,000 registered voters eligible to cast their ballots. President Mokgweetsi Masisi, from the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), is seeking a second and final term, facing strong opposition from the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC). The BDP, in power since 1966, is under pressure to address rising unemployment, which stands at 26%, and criticism over sluggish economic growth of 3.5% in 2023.

To boost voter turnout, which dropped below 60% in the previous election, Masisi declared October 30 and 31 public holidays, aiming to encourage greater participation.

The opposition coalition, UDC, which garnered 35% of the vote last time, is pushing for sweeping reforms, promising economic and social changes to attract voters looking for renewal. Their campaign highlights the need for modernization and greater inclusivity in governance.

Preliminary results are expected within 48 hours, with forecasts indicating a tight race. International observers see this election as a key test of Botswana’s political stability, given its reputation as one of Africa’s most peaceful and enduring democracies.
