Moscow – South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged reforms to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and advocated for a stronger role for developing nations in global governance during the BRICS summit in Russia. Speaking alongside leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, and China, Ramaphosa emphasized the need for equitable rules that reflect the economic realities of emerging economies, calling for fairer trade practices and greater inclusion at the United Nations.
Ramaphosa also stressed the importance of industrial and technological cooperation among BRICS nations, highlighting how joint investments in these sectors could spur growth and resilience amid global economic challenges. He noted that South Africa and other developing nations must have a more significant voice in decision-making processes that shape international trade and diplomacy.
Several African leaders attending the summit echoed Ramaphosa’s message, calling for justice and fairness in global institutions.
The summit underscored the shared goal of creating a more balanced international system, as BRICS nations continue to position themselves as a counterweight to Western-dominated institutions like the WTO and the UN Security Council.
