Kenya’s Supreme Court reinstates 2023 finance act amid controversy

Nairobi – Kenya’s Supreme Court has reinstated the 2023 Finance Act, overturning a lower court’s decision that had nullified the legislation. The controversial law introduces higher taxes on fuel and income, along with a new housing levy, sparking widespread protests and political opposition across the country.

The Finance Act, which the government argues is necessary to address budget deficits and boost public revenue, has faced criticism for burdening households already struggling with high living costs.

The new fuel taxes, in particular, have drawn the ire of many Kenyans, as transportation and food prices are expected to rise further. Opposition leaders have labeled the law “punitive,” accusing the administration of ignoring public outcry.

Despite the backlash, President William Ruto’s government has defended the measures, insisting they are essential for economic stability. With the Supreme Court’s ruling, the law will now take full effect, though opposition parties have vowed to continue their efforts to repeal it through parliamentary channels and public demonstrations.
