The attached video previews the transformation AfricaHeadline will examine in Angola’s Health Reforms, a documentary produced as part of the LIKE Angola: Economic Roadshow.

The film explores how President João Lourenço’s engagement made healthcare a strategic priority, and how Health Minister Sílvia Lutucuta turned that ambition into hospitals, recruitment, specialist training and an expanded municipal network.

Since 2017, Angola has more than tripled its hospital capacity, by the end of 2025, the public system comprised 266 hospitals and 44,894 beds, up from 13,426 when Lourenço took office.

Between 2017 and 2024, the government recruited 46,649 health workers, while fresh investment brought oncology, haemodialysis, intensive care and robotic surgery into the national system. Yet scale has created a more demanding execution challenge. Salaries, medicines, maintenance, power and training require sustained funding amid inflation, currency pressure and volatile oil revenues.

The documentary’s central question is no longer whether Angola can build, it is whether the country can convert its new capacity into reliable, safe and accessible care for every Angolan.
