Today is a sad day for Africa. Our hearts are heavy with the loss of Wicknell Chivayo, a man who turned his life into an expression of ambition, generosity and faith in Africa’s ability to build its own future.

There are days when words seem too small for the weight of a loss. Today is one of them. The death of Wicknell Chivayo leaves Zimbabwe in mourning and touches an Africa that followed his journey, his energy, his dreams and the distinctive way he chose to live his life.

At 43, he died far too young, leaving behind a story that cannot be reduced to wealth, business or luxury. Behind all of that was a man who believed it was possible to dream big in Africa.

Chivayo represented a generation of Africans who no longer want to see the continent simply as a place of need, but as a land of opportunity.

Through his business ventures, particularly in the energy sector, he sought to participate in industries that are central to Africa’s development. On a continent where millions still face limited access to reliable electricity, investment in energy is also investment in industrialisation, technology, education and the future.

But there was also a deeply human side to Chivayo, He became known for his generosity and for supporting students, artists, athletes, institutions and ordinary citizens, He often did so publicly and with the flamboyance that defined his personality, but his support left a tangible mark on many lives.

Perhaps that is the most important part of his story, Chivayo was not afraid to dream.

He showed that a young African could aspire to build wealth, create businesses, invest in his continent and imagine an extraordinary life without apologising for that ambition.

Today, Zimbabwe mourns. Africa mourns. A family has lost a husband, a father, a son and a friend.

But the dreams remain.

May Wicknell Chivayo rest in peace.

Africa has lost a man who dared to dream big.
