Washington, USA – Beijing has taken the unusual step of sending Vice President Han Zheng to attend the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump on Monday, signalling a potential thaw in relations amid rising tensions.

While President Xi Jinping declined Trump’s personal invitation, Han’s presence marks a significant diplomatic gesture as the most senior Chinese official to ever attend a US presidential inauguration.

During his visit, Han met with Vice President-elect JD Vance to discuss trade, the opioid crisis, and regional stability, according to Trump’s transition team. The Chinese Vice President also held talks with American business leaders, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

As reported by China’s state news agency Xinhua, Han emphasised the importance of the US business community as a “bridge” in bilateral relations and encouraged further investment in China, home to Tesla’s largest manufacturing plant outside the United States.

The decision to dispatch Han comes against a backdrop of strained US-China relations over issues such as trade tariffs, technology restrictions, and Taiwan.

Observers note that Beijing appears to be extending an olive branch to the incoming administration. In a recent phone call, Xi congratulated Trump on his re-election and expressed hope for a “fresh start” in their relationship.

Despite Trump’s campaign rhetoric vowing tougher measures against China, analysts suggest his reported admiration for Xi’s leadership style could pave the way for constructive dialogue.
