President highlights constitutional governance, national reconciliation and social progress as Angola reviews its political and economic trajectory.
LUANDA — Angolan President João Lourenço is addressing the nation at the National Assembly in Luanda, marking the opening of the fifth and final legislative session of the country’s Fifth Legislature with his State of the Nation address.
The speech provides an opportunity for the head of state to outline his administration’s priorities, assess progress since taking office in September 2017 and address the challenges facing Angola as the country approaches another important phase in its political development.
Lourenço has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the democratic state, consolidating peace and national reconciliation, improving governance and raising living standards. He has also emphasised his constitutional responsibility to uphold the country’s laws and defend national sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity.
The address comes at a significant institutional moment, as the legislature enters its final session. Beyond reviewing the government’s record, the speech is expected to shape the political debate over institutional performance, economic diversification and the country’s development priorities.
Since independence in 1975, Angola has undergone profound political and economic transformations, including the end of the civil war in 2002 and subsequent efforts to rebuild national institutions and infrastructure. However, challenges involving employment, household purchasing power, public services and economic opportunity remain central to the country’s development agenda.
For Lourenço, the State of the Nation address also provides a platform to connect the government’s reform objectives with the everyday concerns of Angolan citizens. The credibility of that agenda will depend not only on policy commitments but also on measurable improvements in living conditions and the effectiveness of public institutions.
The president has described his approach as centred on strengthening institutions and promoting governance directed towards citizens’ well-being.
As the legislative session opens, the address offers a key reference point for assessing the administration’s priorities and the relationship between political commitments and their implementation.
The central question is whether institutional reforms, economic diversification and social policies can deliver more inclusive growth and translate national development objectives into tangible benefits for Angola’s population.
