Maputo, Moçambique – Mozambique’s Intelligence Services uncovered a staged assassination attempt allegedly linked to Venâncio Mondlane, a prominent opposition politician.

The operation, carried out in Maputo’s upmarket Sommerschield district, revealed an elaborate scheme designed to fabricate a political persecution narrative.

Preliminary investigations suggest that Mondlane may have been aware of or even complicit in the orchestration of the incident, raising serious questions about his political strategies and integrity.

Intelligence spokesperson, stated that the investigation was launched in late December 2024 following reports of suspicious activities near Mondlane’s residence.

The alleged plot included forged testimonies and planted weapons, which were reportedly intended to frame political rivals. Authorities arrested three individuals directly linked to the scheme, including a close advisor to Mondlane.

Mondlane, who recently announced his candidacy for the October 2025 general elections, has denied any involvement, calling the allegations a “fabricated conspiracy” by those opposing democratic progress.

This development has cast a shadow over Mondlane’s political credibility, with analysts suggesting the incident could severely impact his electoral prospects.

The Intelligence Services have pledged to pursue a thorough investigation to identify all those involved and ensure justice is served.

The incident comes at a critical juncture for Mozambique’s political landscape, as the nation prepares for a pivotal election year. Maputo, the country’s capital, now finds itself at the centre of heightened political tensions, underscoring the challenges facing Mozambique’s democratic institutions.
