Moscow, Russia – Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday issued a historical warning to French President Emmanuel Macron, invoking Napoleon Bonaparte’s ill-fated 1812 invasion of Russia in response to the French leader’s recent remarks about Moscow.

Speaking at a meeting with members of the Defenders of the Fatherland Foundation in Moscow, Putin referenced the French military campaign that saw Napoleon’s army decimated by Russian resistance and the harsh winter.
“There was talk about Smolensk and the museum from the time of Napoleon’s invasion. Some still long to return to those days, forgetting how it ended,” Putin said, underscoring what he described as the resilience of Russian forces throughout history.
He added that France had failed to conquer Russia in the past and would fail again, attributing this to the determination of Russian soldiers. Addressing the mother of a Russian serviceman fighting in Ukraine, Putin stated: “With young men like your son, his friends, and comrades, conquering Russia is impossible.”
The Russian leader also accused adversaries of consistently underestimating the unity and character of the Russian people, highlighting the strength of the country’s diverse ethnic groups.
Putin’s comments came in direct response to Macron’s televised address on Wednesday, in which the French president described Russia as “a threat to France and to Europe.” Macron also announced that a strategic debate on nuclear deterrence had begun to ensure the security of European allies, signaling growing concerns over Russia’s military actions.
The exchange underscores escalating tensions between Moscow and Western capitals, particularly as the war in Ukraine continues to reshape European security policies. While Macron has previously advocated for dialogue with Moscow, his latest remarks indicate a hardening stance as France and its NATO allies reassess their defense strategies against Russia.
