Rabat-Salé Tramway transforms urban mobility in Morocco

The Rabat-Salé Tramway has become one of the most significant public transport infrastructure projects in Morocco, revolutionizing urban mobility in the cities of Rabat and Salé. Since its inauguration in 2011, the tramway has played a key role in enhancing the quality of life for residents, improving traffic flow, accessibility, and environmental sustainability.

With over 20 kilometers of track connecting urban and suburban areas, the tramway now serves approximately 110,000 passengers daily, significantly reducing congestion on major roads, especially during peak hours. In some central areas, private vehicle traffic has decreased by up to 30%. With planned expansions, the system aims to serve 150,000 passengers per day by the end of 2025.

Environmental and sustainable impact

The tramway also has a profound environmental impact, aligning with Morocco’s sustainability goals. As a 100% electrictransport system, the tramway has helped reduce annual CO2 emissions by 8,000 tons, underscoring Morocco’s leadership in the fight against climate change. The reduction in air pollution is just one of the environmental benefits of the tramway, which encourages the use of clean public transportation.

Increased accessibility and social inclusion

In addition to its environmental benefits, the tramway has dramatically improved accessibility for the residents of Rabat and Salé. With 31 strategically located stations, the system efficiently connects various neighborhoods, from peripheral areas to the heart of the capital, fostering greater social inclusion. It is estimated that 80% of the population in these cities now live within 500 meters of a tramway station, making it easier for people to access work, education, and public services.

Investment and economic development

The project required a total investment of €500 million in its first phase, funded by international banks, development agencies, and the Moroccan government. This investment covered the construction of the tracks, the acquisition of 44 modern trains, and the installation of essential infrastructure, such as terminals and advanced signaling systems.

Moreover, the tramway’s operation and maintenance have created over 2,000 direct and indirect jobs, from train operators to maintenance crews and administrative staff. With the ongoing expansion of the project, which plans to add new lines by 2026, the number of jobs is expected to increase by 15% in the next two years.

Economic growth and real estate appreciation

The Rabat-Salé tramway has also boosted local economic growth. Improved accessibility has increased commerce in the areas served, benefiting small and medium-sized businesses. Real estate values have also surged, with property prices near tramway stations rising by as much as 25%.

Expansion and modernization

The tramway’s success thus far is just the beginning. Authorities have announced ambitious expansion plans, including the construction of an additional 14 kilometers of track and the opening of 20 new stations by 2026, further extending the system’s reach. These expansions will serve new residential and commercial zones, allowing more citizens to benefit from a modern, safe, and eco-friendly public transport system.

In addition, new technologies are being considered to further modernize the tramway, including digital payment systems and integration with other modes of transport, such as electric buses and bike lanes, creating a fully sustainable mobility network.

A model for the region

The Rabat-Salé Tramway has already established itself as a success story, not only for Morocco but for the wider North African region. Its combination of innovation, sustainability, and positive social impact makes it a model for other cities seeking modern solutions to urban mobility challenges.

With a promising future and continued support from the government and international partners, the Rabat-Salé Tramway is poised to remain a cornerstone of Morocco’s sustainable and economic development. The project not only improves the daily lives of its citizens but also strengthens the country’s position as a leader in eco-friendly, innovative solutions for the cities of tomorrow.
