Xi stressed the importance of deepening strategic coordination and practical cooperation, calling for both nations to “firmly support each other” in response to external challenges. Putin, in turn, emphasised their growing trade relationship and reiterated their mutual goal of countering US dominance in global affairs, describing the China-Russia partnership as a stabilising force on the world stage.
The timing of the meeting has drawn attention, with Trump’s return to the White House raising questions about US foreign policy towards its rivals.
Trump has expressed interest in engaging with Xi and Putin early in his presidency, though he also indicated the possibility of further sanctions on Russia if progress is not made in ending the war in Ukraine.
According to Russian officials, Xi briefed Putin during the call about his recent conversation with Trump, in which the US president suggested Beijing could play a mediating role in resolving the conflict.
The two leaders also highlighted historical ties between their countries, agreeing to commemorate the 80th anniversary of their shared victory in World War II. Events are planned for May in Russia and September in China.
The call underscores the strengthening alliance between Beijing and Moscow as both nations navigate shifting global dynamics and prepare for potential challenges under Trump’s administration.
