Lagos, Nigeria – Simone Ehivet Gbagbo, the former First Lady of Côte d’Ivoire, has announced her candidacy for the country’s 2025 presidential election. Speaking at the convention of her political party, the Mouvement des Générations Capables (MGC), Gbagbo emphasised her belief in the resilience and potential of the Ivorian people.
“I agreed to be a candidate in the presidential election of October 2025 because I deeply believe that every Ivorian, whatever their condition, is capable of transcending trials to dream, create, build, and succeed,” she said.
The announcement positions Gbagbo as a notable contender in what is expected to be a highly competitive election. Her bid comes as her former husband, Laurent Gbagbo, who served as president from 2000 to 2011, has also been nominated by his party, the African People’s Party – Côte d’Ivoire (PPA-CI), to run in the same election.
Laurent Gbagbo’s presidency ended in turmoil following his refusal to concede defeat in the 2010 election, leading to a conflict that resulted in his arrest and eventual trial at the International Criminal Court.
Simone Gbagbo’s candidacy signals a new chapter in her political journey and adds a dynamic layer to Côte d’Ivoire’s political landscape. With the incumbent, President Alassane Ouattara, yet to announce his plans for 2025, the race is shaping up to reflect the enduring influence of established figures and the growing momentum of emerging political movements.
Analysts predict that the election could redefine the country’s trajectory, with key issues including economic recovery, reconciliation, and governance dominating the campaign.
