Angolan students win 68 medals in international academic competitions in UK

Pupils from Colégio Elizângela Filomena secured 12 golds in English competitions and five trophies across international contests, with Welwitschia Simão among the gold medallists.

OXFORD, England — Students from Angola’s Colégio Elizângela Filomena (CEF) won 68 medals and five trophiesin international academic competitions in the UK, marking a strong showing for the southern African country in contests spanning English, mathematics and science.

CEF students competed in TeenEagle English, TeenEagle Math and Xpert, part of an international programme bringing together young participants from different countries.

English produced the school’s largest medal haul. CEF secured 56 awards, including 12 gold, 24 silver and 17 bronze medals, as well as three honourable mentions.

In Receptive Skills, students collected 25 medals, six gold, 12 silver and seven bronze. Productive Skills delivered another 28, six gold, 12 silver and 10 bronze.

Among the individual performances, Welwitschia Simão won gold in Productive Skills, adding to her medal tally at the competition. Gabriela Hailengue, Ochissola Uyali and Enzo Kiamy were also among the Angolan students recognised.

Elionai Franco took first place in the Knowledge Quiz, while Kewerson finished second in the Spelling Bee. CEF itself placed second in the School Awards. Elionai was also named an Overall Winner after achieving the highest score in Category 3 of the Knowledge Quiz.

The results add a broader dimension to Angola’s presence at international student competitions. Rather than success in a single discipline, the CEF tally spans language, mathematics and science, areas increasingly important to countries seeking to build skills-based economies.

For Angola, whose international economic profile remains dominated by oil, the performance offers a smaller but significant counterpoint, a generation seeking recognition abroad through knowledge, academic competition and human capital.
