The presidential aircraft landed at Bole International Airport at approximately 3:30 PM local time, under heightened security and in the presence of a high-level diplomatic delegation. Upon arrival, João Lourenço was received by Ethiopian President Taye Atske-Selassie, alongside senior officials from the African Union Commission.
The transition ceremony, scheduled for Thursday, is expected to bring together several African heads of state and government, as well as representatives from international organizations. As a central pillar of Africa’s diplomatic, economic, and security coordination, the African Union views this leadership change as a crucial step in advancing its strategic priorities for the coming years.
On Friday, in his capacity as Chairperson of the African Union, João Lourenço will visit the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), a key institution under the African Union’s umbrella, dedicated to strengthening the continent’s ability to respond to health emergencies. The Africa CDC has played a vital role in managing public health crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic, and continues to lead efforts to improve healthcare systems across African nations.
During his stay in Addis Ababa, the Angolan leader is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with other African heads of state to discuss regional security, intra-African trade, and strategic initiatives under Agenda 2063, the African Union’s long-term development blueprint.
Background
João Lourenço assumed the rotating presidency of the African Union earlier this year, with a mandate focused on stability, sustainable development, and institutional strengthening. His tenure has been marked by diplomatic efforts to promote peace in conflict zones and initiatives aimed at accelerating the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).
The handover of responsibilities between AU commissioners comes at a time of ongoing institutional reforms within the organization, aimed at improving efficiency and transparency in policy execution.
With this visit, President Lourenço reaffirms his commitment to a more dynamic African Union, capable of addressing emerging challenges and driving economic growth across the continent.
